Lipid Management to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Risk
Description
Release Date: 10/07/2009Expiration Date: 10/07/2010
Evidence-based treatment guidelines have been developed by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III to help practitioners set goals when managing high cholesterol. These guidelines are based on multiple epidemiologic studies and clinical trials that have demonstrated consistently the clinical benefits of lipid-lowering therapy and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) goal attainment. Current guidelines recommend treatment goals should attain LDL < 100 mg/dL, and even lower for higher risk patients. Despite the evidence and the national clinical guidelines, treatment rates remain low with many patients not achieving their LDL targets.
Learning Objectives
Based on current evidence, participants should be able to:1. Assess CVD risk using validated tools
·Identify patients with risk factors
·Diagnose patients with metabolic syndrome
2. Assess current guidelines and supporting evidence for ascertaining treatment goals
3. Improve management of hypercholesterolemia
·Select appropriate pharmacologic therapies from among the current lipid lowering drugs
·Evaluate the importance of laboratory abnormalities that commonly occur in patients on lipid medications and be able to assess the likelihood that they are causally connected to the lipid therapy as well as the need to change or discontinue such therapies because of the lab findings.
